AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) — It was a chance encounter, fueled by the same passion. From there, it became an opportunity.

“I saw someone with the same bike as me, so naturally I decided to try and catch the person and it happened to be the Fort Gordon Garrison Commander, Colonel Anderson,” second lieutenant Kingma said.

Kingma will compete in the upcoming Augusta Ironman. She has the highest ranking officer at Fort Gordon and a program that helps military members compete in triathlons to thank for the chance

“She told me she wanted to try and get in to Augusta, but it was already sold out. I knew about the Scott Rigsby Foundation. I told her I might be able to get her in and it worked out well,” Col. Anderson said.

With that, a training friendship began between high and low ranking officer. Though, Kingma may be more than equal on the course.

She completed the Kona Ironman World Championship course in 2011 and 2013. However, her plunge into the Savannah this weekend will be a special one.

“I’ll be going to Korea for a year, so that’ll be my first assignment and I’m so fortunate to have this opportunity to race this coming Saturday because being in Korea I’m not sure I’ll have that opportunity to go and race Ironman events,” Kingma said.

Born in Belgium. Lived in Thailand. A degree from West Point. Kingma will graduate from officer basic course in November and become a platoon leader at South Korea’s Camp Casey. A site in the far northern part of the country.

“I know people get worried or hear horror stories from Korea, but to me it’ll be a great opportunity,” Kingma said.

Opportunities in different forms. Kingma will represent her country near and far.

“It’s more than just about wearing the uniform and doing army things. The physical and mental endurance it takes to do an Ironman really transcends into what it takes to be an army officer,” Col. Anderson said.
